Mike brings decades of experience as a math instructor at Penn State and as a successful entrepreneur who built businesses in the executive education, finance, and publishing industries. At the core of Mike’s motivation, “I love helping people.”
Because the entire Learner team has the same motivation and believes in the mission to “unlock learning potential through mastery and passion,” the company has experienced tremendous growth. The education team monitors student progress, meets every week, and works with tutors to enhance the instruction for each child. The very first student to use the platform illustrates how Learner works: a parent reached out to Learner desperate for help because her son had to pass math in order to stay in school. As Mike described, “At that point, staying in school is really about staying with your friends. We are talking about someone’s life” not just passing a subject. Through a lot of hard work, the Learner tutor helped this student not only pass, but eventually raise his grade to a 95. “That’s why I do this,” explained Mike.
In addition to expert instruction, the Learner team uses the Trilogy Mentors tutoring platform for their education management. According to Mike, because of the platform’s ease of use, Learner could launch quickly, surpassing 100 tutoring sessions in the first five weeks of being open. Students and tutors can access the platform seamlessly, which allows for optimally effective teaching time, a central tenet of Learner’s business. Tutors deliver timely feedback to students and parents and all sessions are recorded to enhance learning.
What’s the future for Learner? “We are focused on math for now and the processes we need to develop to deliver the best instruction possible,” but Mike knows there are students everywhere who need help in all areas of school. Eventually, Learner will be delivering assistance in these places where the need is most acute. “We know there is tremendous pressure on kids, and we are going to be there to help them.”
